Rihanna is best known as a chart-topping pop star with hit songs like “Diamonds,” “Pour it Up” and “Umbrella” or a party gal who loves wearing mesh bodysuits with marijuana leaves to celebrate 420 or the ex girlfriend of professional scumbag Chris Brown or expert tabloid fodder who is always photographed half naked and looking incredibly hot. But in recent years, she’s attempted a foray into film, playing Petty Officer Cora ‘Weps’ Raikes in the critically panned Battleship in 2012 and playing herself in last year’s apocalyptic comedy This is the End with Seth Rogen, James Franco and company.
But now DreamWorks is putting their faith in Rihanna as a lead voice actress. She’ll be starring as Tip in DreamWorks’ upcoming 3D animated film Home. The singer will be the first black lead character in such a movie. Based on the critically acclaimed book The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, Rihanna will play a headstrong tomboy who helps a group of aliens called Boovs – who have taken over Earth — find a new home. Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory plays the main Boov.
Rihanna’s mother will be played by Jennifer Lopez and comedy icon Steve Martin plays Captain Smek, the leader of the Boovs. In addition to voicing Tip, Rihanna will also sing in the film and help produce a concept album featuring songs from the DreamWorks comedy. DreamWorks has, in recent years, boasted two strong female leads in their animated features, including 2009’s Monsters Vs Aliens starring Reese Witherspoon and last year’s caveman comedy The Croods, starring Emma Stone as the adventurous and athletic Eep. DreamWorks’ most recent film is Mr. Peabody & Sherman which premiered last month in theaters.
