Emmy Award-winning writer-producer Mitch Hurwitz is getting some executive treatment from streaming giant Netflix. The Arrested Development creator landed a huge development deal with the “network.” Hurwitz will create and produce new original series to be streamed on the Internet. He’ll also serve as executive producer on other projects, helping other creators develop their series. The new Netflix “comedy consultant” first worked together on season 4 of his hit former-Fox series. Hurwitz and Arrested Development earned three Primetime Emmy nominations after being resurrected by Netflix, reigniting sparks for a potential feature film starring the Bluth family.
“We are lucky to be in business with Mitch Hurwitz, a true genius with one of the most distinctive voices in comedy today,” said Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. The deal comes on the heels of CEO Reed Hastings’s announcement that Netflix had surpassed projected first quarter earnings this year and is contemplating raising the price of its streaming services for new customers. The streaming service has poured a lot of money into developing quality content in addition to purchasing movie libraries and comedy specials.
Hurwitz is not the only Arrested Development darling to get an Internet deal. Will Arnett will star in the upcoming Netflix original animated series BoJack Horseman and Michael Cera was recently tapped by Xbox Entertainment Studios to develop an original comedy series to stream on its video game console. It’ll be interesting to see what else Hurwitz has hiding in the banana stand.
