John Oliver’s new show Last Week Tonight premieres tonight at 11 pm ET on HBO. That’s just a little over an hour from now from where we’re typing but we’ve already got an amazing preview clip from the series premiere. In it, we find Oliver opining on Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling, who was caught on tape delivering a racist tirade to his girlfriend V. Stiviano, who is, herself, half black and half Mexican. The argument between these two lovebirds began because Stiviano had posted a photo of herself with NBA legend Magic Johnson on her Instagram account. Stiviano has since taken it down.
During the conversation, which you can listen to here, Sterling says things like, “It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” and also, “…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” But perhaps most absurd is this one: “You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.” He seems nice, right?
Oliver also goes after Cliven Bundy, a 67-year-old Nevada cattle rancher who’s been breaking federal law in allowing his cattle to graze on federally-owned land. Bundy has gone on to wonder if black people were “better off as slaves, picking cotton” and other such fun concepts! Check out the clip below from Last Week Tonight and be sure to tune in to the series premiere on HBO at 11 pm ET!
