Melissa McCarthy will once again attempt to make summer box office gold—this time with a movie simply titled Tammy, which was co-written with her husband Ben Falcone, who also directed. Last year, McCarthy, alongside real-life pal Sandra Bullock killed it in cop comedy The Heat, bringing in nearly $160 million at the box office, making it the highest grossing comedy of the year; it also beat out massive critical hits like American Hustle, The Great Gatsby and The Wolf of Wall Street and huge comedy franchises like The Hangover, Anchorman and Grown Ups.
In Tammy, McCarthy won’t have Bullock’s star power to lean on. Instead this movie is all about the Emmy-winning Mike & Molly star, who plays the titular character. Tammy hits the road with her degenerate grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon) after she learns her husband’s been cheating on her. The cast is rounded out by an outstanding list veterans: Toni Collette, Allison Janney, Dan Aykroyd, Kathy Bates, Gary Cole and The League’s Mark Duplass all contribute. And there’s one other interesting casting tidbit we wanted to mention. Mia Rose Frampton, who played the 13-year-old in the jewelry store in Bridesmaids and an epic scene with Kristen Wiig, also has a part in Tammy!
To give you a better sense of what you could expect when Tammy hits theaters on July 2, Warner Bros. just released a brand-spanking new trailer. In it, we find Tammy knocking over a fast food joint, Tammy on a Jet Ski, Tammy attempting to flee the police and more slaptstick hijinks. Check it out and let us know if you’ll be heading to the theaters to see McCarthy in Tammy.
