After canceling a slew of shows today, including cult favorite Community, NBC has picked up the Ellen DeGeneres comedy pilot One Big Happy to series. The multi-camera sitcom will start off as a midseason series with, according to reports, six episodes. Elisha Cuthbert and Nick Zano (2 Broke Girls) star in the gay-straight comedy about two lifelong best friends, Lizzy (type-A lesbian) and Luke (laid back straight guy) who decide to start a family of their own after still ending up single. Things get complicated when Luke meets Prudence, played by Kelly Brook from Smallville, elope right as Lizzy learns that their artificial insemination worked. Now the three of them prepare for a whole different kind of modern family. Ellen DeGeneres will executive produce, marking her return to the sitcom game since her short-lived CBS The Ellen Show ended in 2002 after just one season.
NBC also gave the green light to a couple of Gary Sanchez Productions pilots. Krysten Ritter, who played Jane on the Emmy Award-winning AMC show Breaking Bad and starred as Chloe in Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 for two seasons on ABC, will star in Mission Control as a brilliant aerospace engineer in 1960s NASA. She has to lead a team of NASA scientists at the cutting edge of space exploration, but faces the sexist challenges of the era. Think Veronica Corningstone from Anchorman but with physics. Adam McKay and Owen Burke, with Ferrell, will executive produce. Bad Judge will star Kate Walsh as a hardliving judge whose personal life is at odds with her career as a judge in the San Bernardino Criminal Court system. Walsh will executive produce with Anne Heche, who came up with the idea, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay.
