USA joins TBS, FX and IFC as yet another network pouring money into developing original comedy series. After greenlighting its first original comedy series in over a decade — Sirens — the USA network announced a healthy slate of comedies currently in development. Its EMT sitcom and recently-debuted Playing House hope to make the cable channel a comedy destination. A pilot presentation has already been ordered for Amy Poehler-executive produced Difficult People. Created by and starring Billy Eichner (pictured) and Julie Klausner, the show is about two pop culture-obsessed best friends and comedians in New York City who hate pretty much everyone except each other.
Also being developed at USA is Love The One You’re With is a cougar comedy about a free-spirited woman who reluctantly falls in love with an aggressive man 14 years younger than her. The script comes from Legally Blonde scribe Karen McCullah. Royal is a fresh family comedy with a biker twist. Nick Schenk’s script follows the titular character, a recently defected Hells Angel member, who moves back to the suburbs to care for his dead sister’s children. Naturally, the transition is pretty difficult.
Moguls is a single-camera comedy about employees of a popular Colorado ski resort. The show will focus on a young man who thinks he’s in charge and a woman from the corporate office who knows she’s in charge. Lastly, Queer as Folk‘s Jon Tolins pens a script about a longtime friendship tested when a struggling documentarian becomes his real estate mogul friend’s personal assistant. Michael Urie stars in Majordomo.
