An obvious piece of news in the melee of series pickups, cancellations and renewals: ABC’s Modern Family will return for a sixth season this fall. The critically-acclaimed comedy has been the centerpiece of ABC’s comedy lineup. It’s won the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series for the past four years as well as multiple awards for its actors. It began the cash cow that is syndication last September on the USA Network, which has begun developing its own slate of comedy series, as well as several Fox affiliate stations. So long as Modern Family continues to make itself one of the highest rated sitcoms on television, red carpet darling and highest paid television actor Sofía Vergara and the rest of the Pritchett family — not to mention the Dunphys — will probably be around for quite some time.
ABC will bring back another family sitcom next fall. The Jeff Garlin and Wendi McLendon-Covey led 1980s comedy The Goldbergs will return for a sophomore season after an impressive showing in its timeslot this year. Season two will hope to outdo itself both in jokes and in ugly sweaters.
