UPDATE 5:40 pm ET — Truck driver Kevin Roper, 35, of Jonesboro, Ga. has been charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto.
As for Morgan, “He’s got a brace on his neck, but he’s smiling,” says a friend of the comedian’s, according to the New York Post, adding the friend accompanied Morgan’s ex-wife, Sabina Morgan, on a visit to the hospital.
UPDATE 1:35 pm ET — An 18-wheeler truck driver caused the accident after dozing off. “Driver failed to observe slow-moving traffic ahead,” New Jersey State Police Sgt. First Class Gregory Williams said. “He observed at the last minute — just prior to impact — the limo bus carrying Morgan and his party.”
“His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care,” Morgan’s rep, Lewis Kay said “We don’t anticipate much of a change in his condition today.”
Comedian Jimmy Mack, a friend and writer for Morgan, was killed in the accident. Jeff Millea, Morgan’s assistant is also in critical condition. Two others — likely comedians Harris Stanton and Ardie Fuqua — who were in Morgan’s vehicle are also injured, though their condition is not known at this time.
Tracy Morgan is in critical condition after being involved in a six-car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike. Morgan, 45, is currently in Intensive Care at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, according to the Associated Press. “Critical condition” is defined as “Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.” The AP’s report is below:
State police say actor and comedian Tracy Morgan is in intensive care after the limousine bus in which he was riding in was involved in a multi-vehicle accident on the New Jersey Turnpike.
Sgt. First Class Greg Williams tells The Associated Press that the vehicle carrying the 45-year-old former ‘‘Saturday Night Live’’ and ‘‘30 Rock’’ cast member and six others was involved in a six-vehicle accident on the turnpike near Cranbury Township at about 1 a.m. Saturday. A spokesman at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey, says a patient named Tracy Morgan is in critical condition there.
Williams says one person riding in the bus was killed. There was no immediate word on the condition of others involved in the accident. Williams says two tractor-trailers, a sports utility vehicle and two cars, along with Morgan’s limo bus, were involved in the accident.
Morgan was most recently seen on Spike TV’s One Night Only tribute to Don Rickles and on his newest one-hour comedy special Bona Fide, which aired on Comedy Central.
