Dave Chappelle appeared on The Tonight Show on Friday, where he revealed his first encounter with Kanye West. And it was just as hilariously random as you would expect.

Dave Chappelle revealed to host Jimmy Fallon that he first met Kanye West in 2003, when he was an unknown rapper appearing on Chappelle’s Show.

“You could tell that he was going to be a star,” Dave Chappelle said of Kanye West.  “ … It was like Muhammad Ali in Olympic Village. He just knew he was going to get the gold.”

Kanye West

Kanye West taped his appearance on Chappelle’s Show the same day Jay Z’s Black Album was released. So the duo listened to the record at David Chappelle’s studio, alongside Common and Talib Kweli. The 12th song of that album, “Lucifer,” features Jay giving a shout-out to the future Mr. Kim Kardashian.

“Jay Z says on one record, ‘Kanyeezy, you’s a genius. You did it again,’” Dave Chappelle recalled. “And Kanye stood up — first time he spoke all day — and he goes, ‘Stop the record and rewind THAT.’”

Dave Chappelle’s meeting with the rapper only got more Kanye-esque from there. After taping Chappelle’s Show, the comedian invited West to watch some unaired sketches while the episode was being edited. The incident that took place convinced everyone that “Kanye was going to be a star.”

The moment in question took place when Kanye West received a phone call while watching the unaired Dave Chappelle sketches. West’s response to the caller was classic Kanye.

“Hello?” Kanye West answered, per Dave Chappelle. “No, I can’t. Because I’m at the edit for the Dave Chappelle Show, watching sketches that no one’s seen before. ’Cause my life is dope, and I do dope sh–.”
