Ever since she announced the ending of Chelsea Lately in April, Chelsea Handler has kept the comedy world guessing as to what her next step would be. But today Netflix announced what many have assumed—Handler will develop a new talk show for the streaming service. Starting in 2016, Chelsea Handler will star in a brand new talk show for Netflix.
“If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested,” Handler says. “I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I’m more excited than I’ve been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward thinking, alert group I’ve sat down with in ages. No offense to the Shahs Of Sunset.”
But Handler’s Netflix deal begins not with the talk show but with the veteran comedian’s new hour-long special. Based on her newest stand-up tour and book Uganda Be Kidding Me, Handler will film the new special at the Harris Theater in Chicago on Friday, June 20 and will premiere Oct. 10 on Netflix. Handler will also create four “docu-comedy specials” next year for Netflix, which the company explains will cover subjects like politics, NASCAR, the NBA Draft and Silicon Valley.
