Last night’s airing of the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards hosted by Seth Meyers not only brought out nearly every television star in the country but also created some drama—mainly in the form of Modern Family star (and highest paid television actor) Sofia Vergara.
In an attempt at humor, Vergara accompanied Academy of Television Arts & Sciences president Bruce Rosenblum during his boring and, we assume, mandatory speech. Vergara literally twisted on a pedestal, wearing a long, white form-fitting gown in order to provide the Emmys audience with distraction from Rosenblum’s speech. Almost immediately, some on social media took to Twitter implying the bit was sexist toward women.
Comedian Sara Schaefer tweeted, “What Sofia Vergara just did is more upsetting than any of what the ladies at the VMA’s have done” to her more than 51,000 Twitter followers. And Schaefer wasn’t alone. “I love Sofia Vergara but did anyone find that schtick somewhat offensive?” Katie Couric tweeted. “On the plus side, the Vergara bit has magically united everyone in my Twitter feed in mutual sorrow and shame,” tweeted New Yorker television critic Emily Nussbaum.
After the Emmys, however, Vergara defended the bit, saying she didn’t think it was sexist at all. “I think it’s absolutely the opposite,” Vergara told reporters. “It means someone can be hot and also be funny and make fun of herself and enjoy and work and make money, so I absolutely think it’s ridiculous. Vergara added, “And somebody who started this, and I know who she was, has no sense of humor and should lighten up a little bit!”
